Ben Brears just updated his website with this very nice (adbusters inspired?) campaign. Playing the big-brands at their own game.

Dumbass… how about all the other people that went into that cup of coffee? Just in the U.S.A. – the guy who trucked it, the warehouse guy who shipped it, the person who served it, the manager who scheduled it, the bookkeeper who recorded it, the guy who cleaned the table, the person who swept the floors…

If you really want to make a point, make it using real facts, not just silly points pulled out of the air. There are plenty of reasons to get on Starbucks case, this one is just too weak.

@Ri-l – I hear what you are saying, Starbucks create thousands of jobs all over the world.

That said, I believe that Ben’s piece does have a purpose, people should be aware of the realities in buying non-fairtrade / unethical products.

In my opinion it’s all about enabling people to make informed choices.

Ummm… @Ri-l I think the point Ben is actually making is that although there are plenty of people involved in getting that cup of coffee to you, like the cleaners, book keepers, managers, waiters etc.. those people are being paid fairly and have unions they can join if they aren’t.

UNLIKE the coffee farmers in Ethiopia who supply StarBucks and get paid $1.60 for something that Starbucks are then making 100% sales increase on.

The point is StarBucks are *exploiting* the coffee farmers. Paying them a terrible wage for a large amount of work, just because they can but that doesn’t make it right.

You Sir, are the dumbass. I can’t think of a better reason to boycott Starbucks.
